How do I apply as a volunteer to the LA's BEST program?
Just fill out the application on this Web site as completely as you can. After the Director of Volunteers receives your application and a copy of your tuberculosis clearance, she will set up a meeting with you and the site coordinator at a school site closest to your preferred location.
If I had a tuberculosis test one year ago, do I need to get another one?
Yes. The Los Angeles Unified School District requires a Mantoux skin test within six months of starting as a new volunteer. You may be tested by your own physician or health clinic, or go to a County Public Health Center in your area where the test should be free to volunteers in LAUSD.
Do I need training in the field of education to volunteer at LA's BEST?
No. All you need is enthusiasm for working with less advantaged children, the ability to express that enthusiasm, the ability to be a good listener and the willingness to learn from the children.
Is training offered?
An in-depth volunteer handbook is provided to all volunteers, and a 20-minute orientation video is available to groups of volunteers. The handbook includes tips regarding ways in which children learn, effective ways to communicate with children, tutoring and conflict resolution. Orientation and training are currently provided at each site by the LA's BEST staff.
Do I have to report my hours?
Yes. The process is simple: When you arrive at the school site you will sign in on the Volunteer Time Sheet and pick up your name badge; when you leave for the day you will sign out, record your total hours (to the nearest half-hour), and turn in your badge. That's it!
Do I need to have a background check to volunteer at LA's BEST?
No, but it is the law and strict LA's BEST policy that a volunteer may never be alone with a child or group of children unless they have a criminal background check on file with LA's BEST. A staff member must always be present.
Do I have to volunteer from 2:30 to 6:00 every day?
No. We ask for a minimum commitment of one hour each time you volunteer. We prefer every week, but in special circumstances a volunteer can work once every two weeks, or even once a month. Of course, if you want to work three hours a day, five days a week, we will be happy to have you!
What if I do not have weekday afternoons free, can I still volunteer?
Yes. We need volunteers at occasional special events, usually on the weekends. Type "weekends" in the field that asks for "Days & Hours Available" on the application form. You do not need to submit a tuberculosis test for this kind of volunteering.
What types of activities can I do as a volunteer at LA's BEST?
You can help with homework, tell a story, read a book or assist with other activities that include arts and crafts, math and science projects, computer learning, performing arts and team games.
