Yes, LA's BEST is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating through a unique partnership that includes the City of Los Angeles, the Mayor's Office, Los Angeles Unified School District and the private sector.

How is LA's BEST funded?

LA's BEST is funded through a combination of federal, state, city and private sector dollars. Support from the private sector includes donations from individuals and corporations as well as foundation grants.

Who manages LA's BEST?

LA's BEST is co-managed from two offices that work in partnership: a corporate office located within the Office of the Mayor and an Operations Office located at LAUSD. All staff members are accountable to the LA's BEST Board of Directors, the LA's BEST Advisory Board, the Los Angeles Mayor and City Council, the LAUSD Superintendent of Instruction, the LAUSD Associate Superintendent of the Beyond the Bell Branch and the LAUSD School Board. The LA's BEST management team includes nationally recognized after school experts.

How many schools have LA's BEST programs?

Currently, 168 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) elementary schools have LA's BEST programs. The LA's BEST program operates directly on the elementary school campuses. For a list of schools and their locations, see the Our Schools tab in the Program section of this Web site.

How many children are enrolled in LA's BEST? How are they selected?

Approximately 26,000 students participate in LA's BEST Monday through Friday from the end of the school day until 6 p.m. The program is open to children who regularly attend a school where LA's BEST is located and is offered at no cost to parents. Students are enrolled on a first come, first served basis with some spaces reserved for special referrals by principals and counselors of students whom they feel are in great need of such a program.

LA's BEST serves children ages 5 to 12 who are enrolled in elementary school (kindergarten through 6th grade).

How are schools selected to have the LA's BEST program?

To become an LA's BEST site, an elementary school must be located in an area of economic need, be vulnerable to crime and gang activity, and demonstrate low student test scores. In addition, more than 50% of the total school population must qualify for the Federal Subsidized Lunch Program. Based on these criteria and the expressed interest of the school principal and community, LAUSD's Beyond The Bell branch selects LA's BEST sites.

How do I get LA's BEST at my school?

Parents and principals are encouraged to send letters stating need to the Beyond the Bell Director of Before and After School Programs, Dorothy Padilla. Send communication to her attention, c/o Beyond the Bell Branch, LAUSD Central Office, 333 S. Beaudry Ave, Floor 28, Los Angeles, CA 90017.
