LA's BEST Launches #GetOnTheBusLA Campaign!

One of the distinctions of LA’s BEST is the experiences we make happen for our kids through field trips. For most of our children the destinations are to places that our students may not ever get to visit if it were not for the adventures we make happen. We have taken a quarter of a million children on trips throughout our history.

Unfortunately, this year's transportation funding has been slashed, preventing us from continuing to take children on field trips. We know these experiences change their lives and broaden their awareness of possibilities.

A typical Saturday night in Santa Monica.

Except this was for kids. And a fundraiser, no less.

More than 700 rising young professionals exited the fast lane for one night to support a worthy cause, LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program, which provides free enrichment to the children with the highest needs all over the city at 195 schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

TOMS gives to LA's BEST!

When the LA summer ends and a new school year is on the horizon, our kids shift their focus from enjoying the summertime fun to going back to school.

Although books and school supplies are on the shopping list, we can't forget about the back-to-school wardrobe!  After all, children are growing beings; their pant legs quickly grow shorter and their shoe sizes suddenly get bigger!

This year, our kids at LA's BEST got a little help from our friends at TOMS.

84 Ways to Say Good Job!

Sometimes praise and encouragement sound like the same thing. Encouragement helps children to do their best. Parents need to be cheerleaders in their children’s lives, but they also need to be a reality check. Encouragement is meant both to acknowledge an accomplishment or an attempt to do something and to promote further development. Real encouragement helps children develop skills for self evaluation, and find the quality in their work.

Here is a simple recipe for encouragement. The ingredients are listed, and there’s no need to go to the market to prepare this. Serving instructions follow.

1. Alright!
2. Amazing effort!
3. Awesome!
4. Beautiful!
5. Bravo!

Baron Davis unveils his Reading & Learning Center at South Park

Every child has a dream. Do you remember yours? Baron Davis definitely remembers his. As a young boy, he dreamed of becoming a basketball player. Davis spent hours at the neighborhood basketball court, playing with kids that were much older than he was. His dream was embraced and supported by his classmates, teachers, after school staff, and most importantly, his family.

As many of us know, Baron Davis went on to achieve that goal, first playing for UCLA and then becoming a two-time NBA All-Star.

The Los Angeles native keeps this city close to his heart, and on Wednesday, August 13, he made that dedication clear when he unveiled the Baron Davis Reading & Learning Center at his former school, South Park Elementary.

Carla Sanger featured in Youth Today!

LA's BEST President & CEO Carla Sanger was recently interviewed by Gary Gately, a writer for Youth Today, on her LA's BEST career, her days in the classroom, how her father influenced her to become a teacher, and much more.

Here is an excerpt from the article:

"Sanger, a lifelong educator and a pioneering advocate for out-of-school programs, reflects on her father’s influence.

'He was the first to help me to understand that when you know the streets that the school’s located on, and you know the community, and you know the families and you know the children, you’re going to have much more engagement to create the culture and climate for children to learn,' Sanger said. 'So my father was a prince among educators.'

Sanger has applied her father’s wisdom well in a career spanning more than 45 years, most recently as president and CEO of the acclaimed nonprofit LA’s BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow) After School Enrichment Program in Los Angeles. Sanger, 69, announced in May she will retire from LA’s BEST at the end of November.

BEST Friends to celebrate their 10th Anniversary!

You may have heard that the LA's BEST Friends board will be holding its annual UnWINEd fundraising event on October 11th at Hangar 8, but did you also hear that the board is celebrating its 10th Anniversary?!

In honor of #BESTFriends10, let's take a walk down memory lane... In 2004, Carla Sanger, President and CEO of LA's BEST, discovered the opportunity to tap into the community of young professionals for support, after seeing the volunteer initiatives of her two sons. The 18-member board was created in February of that year, with Mario Marin as the founding board chair.

Today, the board is comprised of 26 members, including Board Chair Jordan Kaye, Vice Board Chair David Lessoff, and Jr. Vice Chair Jennifer Searle. Beyond the board, there are over 3,500 BEST Friends in the network who advocate for LA's BEST and support the group's fundraising events, as well as the volunteer initiatives...
