Over 70 LA's BEST Students Participate in the Celebrate Science Fair

LA’s BEST hosted its 24th Annual Celebrate Science Fair at California State University of Los Angeles. The Celebrate Science Fair is the culmination of the LA’s BEST Celebrate Science Program, which encourages students to discover, explore, and develop an appreciation for the world of science.

This year’s event, hosted by Belma Michael Johnson, former television host and current Vice President of Communications for LA’s BEST, featured Noel Ellis of Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems and Luz Rivas of DIY Girls, as Keynote Speakers.

In the months leading up to the event, students throughout LA’s BEST engaged in fun-filled, interactive science experiences utilizing the “team inquiry” model developed by LA’s BEST under the guidance of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Science teams presented their projects at local and regional science fairs before advancing to the 24th Annual Celebrate Science Fair.

The advancing teams included students from 19 LA’s BEST schools, with projects ranging from ‘How to Pierce a Balloon without Popping It’ to ‘Strategizing Mnemonics’. Over 70 students in total participated in this year’s Celebrate Science Fair.

Teams from Dyer, Farmdale, Kittridge, Sally Ride, Valley View, Vinedale, Westminster, and Wilton Place took home the top prize, earning trips to the Long Beach Marine Institute, where students will be “Oceanographers for the Day” aboard an 80-foot vessel followed by a visit to the Aquarium of the Pacific, and the Columbia Memorial Space Center. Winners also received tickets to visit the Discovery Cube with their families.

Runners up from 1st, 42nd, Aldama, Figueroa, Kim, Langdon, Limerick, Manchester, Monte Vista, and Normont will join the winning teams for a trip to the Columbia Memorial Space Center.

This year’s Celebrate Science Fair was sponsored by United Airlines, Macy’s Foundation, The Mark Hughes Foundation, Southern California Gas Company, and California State University, Los Angeles.
