LA's BEST to present Live Your Dream Award to So You Think You Can Dance
Our final honoree will have you dancing! LA's BEST is excited to be recognizing So You Think You Can Dance (SYTYCD) for inspiring our students to live their dreams since 2008.
SYTYCD, a competitive dance television show created by Nigel Lythgoe and Simon Fuller, inspires and amazes viewers across America as talented dancers skilled in everything from Hip Hop, Krumping and Popping to Salsa, Quickstep and Jive compete to be named America’s Favorite Dancer.
Hosted by Cat Deeley, SYTYCD travels across the country, in search of dancers who represent the best in America. Those who shine during auditions are given “callbacks,” where they work with top choreographers to learn and to be judged on multiple styles of dance.
The series is in its 12th season, with the competition pitting stage dancers vs. street dancers. SYTYCD has also invited world-renowned choreographer, performer, singer and songwriter Paula Abdul and singer, songwriter and dancer Jason Derulo to join Nigel at the judges’ table.
First introduced in 2007, SYTYCD and a handful of the show’s choreographers, including Mia Michaels and Shane Sparks, did a six-week dance workshop with LA’s BEST staff and students. They celebrated with a culmination featuring students, Nigel, and the SYTYCD All-Stars.
Nigel Lythgoe joined the LA’s BEST Governing Board of Directors in 2008. The son of a dockworker, Nigel was born in Merseyside and became interested in dance as a child, studying at the Hylton-Bromley School of Dance and Drama and the Perry Cowell School of Dance, both in Wallasey. He joined the BBC’s Young Generation dance troupe in 1969, and later became its choreographer, where he created dance routines for hundreds of TV programs and worked with dance icons, including Gene Kelly. Recently, Nigel was awarded the designation Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s Birthday Honors. The order recognizes extraordinary achievement by a British citizen.
Since joining the LA’s BEST board, Nigel’s foundation, Dizzy Feet, has supported LA’s BEST dance programs through in-kind donations and general financial support of the organization.
SYTYCD has become a cultural phenomenon by embodying teamwork, artistic expression, determination and other values shared by LA’s BEST.
With every episode, So You Think You Can Dance encourages our students to live their dreams. With the Live Your Dream Award, we are proud to recognize the SYTYCD family for inspiring children in Los Angeles and beyond.
