LA's BEST to honor Albertsons & The Vons Foundation

Over the years, Albertsons & The Vons Foundation has supported LA's BEST by dedicating funds and volunteers towards our garden and BEST Fit programs. Their commitment to our children and building a healthier community is one of the reasons why we will be recognizing them in June with the Community Partner Award.

Joe Albertson opened his first grocery store in 1939. By the 1950’s, Albertsons became a familiar name to shoppers throughout the west. Even as the war years raged on, Joe’s business grew. Likewise, his generosity, commitment and involvement toward the community also grew.

In 1966, Joe and his wife, Kathryn, established the J.A. and Kathryn Albertson Foundation as a way to administer their own charitable giving. The foundation focused their giving primarily on education, which was important to Joe and Kathryn because neither was able to finish college during the Great Depression. Since ites early beginnings, the Foundation has given more than $240 million to Idaho’s communities and education systems. The Foundation continues to give to charities, primarily in areas where Joe and Kathryn lived or worked in Idaho.

The Safeway Foundation supports causes that impact its customers' lives. The stores raise money and awareness in their neighborhoods through employees' passion, partnerships with vendors, and contributions from customers. The foundation gives locally, supporting good health, human services, hunger relief, education and people living with disabilities.

Vons has always taken its community responsibilities seriously. The company and its employees raise millions of dollars annually for their local Easter Seals Society. Employees are also able to earmark funds for specific charities through the Vons Foundation. The range of recipients has been broad, from teacher training to local food banks. It has always been the policy of Vons to support their communities at the local, personal level.

Employees from the company have literally gotten their hands dirty, working with LA’s BEST. They’ve helped install gardens at three LA’s BEST elementary schools: Sunrise, Fair and Toland Way.

In addition, Albertsons & The Vons Foundation has played a crucial role in our Annual Health Festival for the past four years. Not only does the foundation support our program through in-kind donations, their staff volunteers actively participate at both our events.

On June 27, LA's BEST will present the Community Partner Award to Albertsons & The Vons Foundation for their commitment to our students and their families.
