Celebrating Connections Event

This year’s partnership between LA's BEST and Jewish day schools around Los Angeles saw the participation of 700 students from 13 different elementary schools who came together to share their cultures and traditions. The culminating event held this past Sunday celebrated the participants through arts, crafts, music and friendship and a special ceremony. Singer Cymphonique, accompanied by students, sang "Together We'll Be Strong," an original song created for LA's BEST and the children of Los Angeles.

NASA's Summer of Innovation Kick-Off

LA's BEST students from Castelar and Gratts elementary schools joined NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden, astronauts, engineers and educators at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena to kick off the Summer of Innovation, NASA's contribution to the "Educate to Innovate" initiative set by the Obama Administration to improve participation and performance of America's students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Students attended the welcome program, broadcast live on NASA TV, and then participated in hands-on science activities including building and launching their own stomp rockets.

15th Annual Family Brunch

15th Annual Family Brunch

More than 400 supporters attended the 15th Annual Family Brunch which honors those who support the program and enrich the lives of underprivileged children in Los Angeles. At this year’s brunch, we were proud to recognize Mattel, Inc. with our prestigious Community Partner award, Sohar Quinteros with the Distinguished Alumna Award and Peter Murrieta, writer and producer and David Henrie, star of Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, with the Children’s Champion Award. The event raised more than $620,000 and included a raffle for the all-new 2010 Toyota Prius.

Actor Devon Werkheiser Does Improv with Grant Elementary

Actor Devon Werkheiser, also known as Ned Bigby on the Nickelodeon sitcom "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide" has been doing improv workshops at Grant Elementary in his neighborhood in Hollywood for the past three weeks. Devon, students and Karen Baughn, an improv instructor from Bang improv studio play games and act with their peers.

Mural at 7+FIG

Brookfield Properties has partnered with Art 2 Go, 7+FIG’s monthly kids club facilitator, and LA’s BEST to create a mural which is on display in the 7+FIG food court in downtown Los Angeles. Councilmember Jan Perry visited the mural and painted with LA's BEST students from The Accelerated School. Over the past few weeks, LA's BEST students from Lizarraga, Menlo, West Vernon, and Trinity elementary schools have contributed their artistic creations to complete the mural.
