TEACH Panel with Secretary Arne Duncan and LA's BEST

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan joined two teachers who began their careers as LA's BEST staff and two aspiring teachers currently working for the program, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, as well as Grammy award-winning artist John Legend, and boxing champion Oscar de la Hoya for a panel discussion on Latino teacher recruitment at Edward R. Roybal Learning Center in Los Angeles. Approximately 400 students and 100 education stakeholders from the Los Angeles area were in attendance.

Craft Day at Hoover Elementary

Thanks to the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) and all of their generous members who donated supplies, students at Hoover Elementary spent an afternoon decorating everything from door knob hangers and visors to scrapbook art squares and more. Volunteers from the CHA, including crafting extraordinaire and LA’s BEST Board member Candy Spelling and CHA spokesperson Terri O were on hand to ensure it was a fun and creative day!

Target volunteers joined Alma Flor Ada and Isabel Campoy, authors and creators of the Young Authors Program, to celebrate 200 of LA’s BEST and newest young authors and the books they each wrote during the three-month program, geared to turn their own experiences and imaginations into meaningful words and illustrations.

Football Fever

Football Fever

Thanks to the National Football League, 4,000 students on LA’s BEST flag football teams were thrilled to take home brand-new NFL Play 60 footballs. The donation is part of an NFL initiative that focuses on offering youth opportunities to play and experience football with the belief that owning a football is the first step. To generate a greater interest in the sport, each football has a bilingual hangtag that directs students to online instructional football videos in English and Spanish.
