In celebration of Earth Day and the ongoing Go H2O partnership with the American Chemistry Council, more than 90 LA's BEST sites held recycling festivals this week. The festivals included games like Water Bottle Bowling and a Recycling Relay Race that all use recyclable materials and reinforce the importance of reducing waste, increasing recycling and developing healthy habits at a young age.
Sixteen teams, who advanced as winners from their regional science fair, competed in this year's 20th Annual Celebrate Science Fair held at California State University, Los Angeles. The students presented their projects to an esteemed panel of judges and the winners walked away with an overnight trip to the Ocean Institutte's Watershed Science Program. Runner up winners also won a prize and will accompany the winners on a trip to the Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey.
More than 300 students from 26 LA's BEST school sites took the stage at the 17th Annual Community Jam. Originally inspired by taking a stand against violence, this year's performing arts event featured dance, song, drama and spoken word performances by the students. Photos by Ben Gibbs.
Target volunteers joined author and creator of the Young Authors program Isabel Campoy and students from the LA's BEST south region, for the second culminating event to celebrate 200 more new young authors and the books they wrote during the three-month program, which teaches the students to take their own experiences and turn them into meaningful words and illustrations.
