Geek Squad Summer Academy at Leo Politi

The Best Buy volunteers and Geek Squad Summer Academy were back in full force at LA’s BEST for their third year in a row. The Geek Squad Team and volunteers from local Best Buy stores taught students at Leo Politi Elementary crucial computer skills like how to trouble shoot computer problems, record music and take, upload and edit photos!

Central Library Press Conference

Twenty-six third- and fourth-grade students from the LA's BEST summer program at Noble Avenue Elementary joined Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilmembers Eric Garcetti, Tom LaBonge, Bernard Parks and Jan Perry and City Librarian Martín Gómez to launch the return of Monday service at all 73 city libraries at a press conference outside Central Library. As part of the celebration, the students enjoyed story time with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa who read to them The Tale of Rabbit and Coyote.

LA's BEST 16th Annual Family Brunch

More than 400 people turned out to make after school their cause at the 16th Annual Family Brunch at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. LA’s BEST honored Elizabeth Banks with the Children’s Champion Award presented by Eva Longoria, the Nederlander Organization and the Pantages Theatre with the Community Partner Award presented by Cathy Rigby and Morris Vanegas with the Distinguished Alumnus Award presented by Shayla Rivera. Twenty-one student winners of a citywide essay and art contest were also honored. The program was hosted by Michaela Pereira and included special guests NBA legend Jerry West, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LA’s BEST Board Chair Marvin Suomi.

Rio Vista Girls Participate in The Art of Peace Workshop

LA's BEST supporter and author of "The Art of Social War," Jodi Wing, volunteered her time with twenty girls from the Young Authors Program at Rio Vista Elementary School. Ms. Wing led her "Art of Peace" workshop, which combines literacy and conflict resolution activities.

LA's BEST Volunteer Coordinators Honored by KOREH L.A.

On Saturday, May 15, The Jewish Federation and KOREH L.A.'s honored LA's BEST Volunteer Coordinators Karen Rivas and Robert Devis for their support of the KOREH L.A.'s reading program. Each year, KOREH L.A. trains volunteer reading partners who work with LAUSD students to help enhance their reading skills and foster a love of reading with students who are reluctant readers. Kudos to our dedicated staff, Karen and Robert!
