LA’s BEST was recently presented with a commendation from Los Angeles City Councilmember Richard Alarcón for partnering with Safe Moves to teach our children the importance of bicycle and traffic safety. At the most recent event, LA’s BEST students from Dyer Elementary rode bikes through a miniature city featuring streets, sidewalks, cars, trucks and traffic signs and learned how to be cautious and avoid accidents when bicycling in their neighborhoods.
A very lucky group of girls at Lankershim Elementary were treated to a month-long workshop series called the “Art of Peace” led by author Jodi Wing. Ms. Wing led the girls in activities and dialogue about conflict resolution. They celebrated the culmination of the workshop with a very special tea party, complete with cucumber sandwiches, scones, and of course home-made fascinators, inspired by the hats of the royal wedding.
This summer, thanks the David & Lucile Packard Foundation, our students went on many exciting field trips, including to the Star Eco Station where they learned about exotic rescue animals. After their visit to the Eco Station, they had lunch at a local park and enjoyed vanilla gelato generously donated by Villa Dolce!
Six LA's BEST students won scholarships and attended the Idyllwild Arts Camp this summer for a two week program. The students were nominated based on their interests and spent their time at camp perfecting their skills on the piano, creating visual art pieces and dancing. The camp culminated with the children showcasing their hard work for their parents in a piano recital, art exhibits and a dance show.
