Viacommunity Day

Viacom employees volunteered with LA’s BEST at Fletcher Elementary for Viacommunity Day again this year! Viacom employees, including several from Nickelodeon—the Children’s Champion honoree for our brunch this year—helped facilitate eco-friendly activities surrounding Earth Day. Our Distinguished Alumnus honoree Miguel Melendez also came out to help with the day’s festivities!

Earth Day with ACC/Go H2O and LA's BEST

LA’s BEST celebrated Earth Day with environmentally-themed festivals at all 186 sites in partnership with the American Chemistry Council’s “Go H2O” campaign. Representatives from the offices of Assemblymembers Isadore Hall, Holly Mitchell, Felipe Fuentes and State Senator Curren Price came out to join in the fun, which included water bottle bowling and a recycling relay race.

Kappa Alpha Psi mentorship at YES Academy

Graduate members of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity formed a mentorship club with fourth-and-fifth-grade boys in the LA’s BEST program at YES Academy. The club gave the boys a venue to talk about growing up in a challenging, urban community while also teaching them valuable life skills, such as a proper handshake, making introductions, and tying a necktie. They held a celebration to mark the culmination of the 12-week program.

Young Authors Culmination - South Region 2012

Author Isabel Campoy led more than 100 LA’s BEST students from nine South Los Angeles schools in the writing process to create their own book about an important person in their lives. The writing workshop celebrated the culmination of the Young Authors Program, a program sponsored by Target and in partnership with the California Readers Association.

21st Annual Celebrate Science Fair

21st Annual Celebrate Science Fair

More than 70 students from 17 LA’s BEST sites competed in the 21st Annual Celebrate Science Fair on April 15, 2012. The event, hosted by Aerospace Engineer and Comedian Shayla Rivera with keynote speaker ABC7 Weathercaster Danny Romero, showcased the work of student groups who set out on scientific discoveries from learning where the cleanest water comes from to finding the best type of insulation. Teams from Anatola, Bassett, Canterbury, Castelar, Euclid and Pacoima elementary schools won the top prize of a 4-day trip to Yosemite Institute. Runner-up schools will join the winners for a day trip to the Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey.
