Usher Raymond IV to be Honored at LA's BEST 14th Annual Family Brunch

Inspiring and celebratory brunch to recognize leadership in supporting young students across Los Angeles, highlights the present need and raises funds for LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program
LOS ANGELES — LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program’s 14th Annual Family Brunch, which salutes the importance of family and honors those in our community who contribute significantly to and recognize the importance of LA’s BEST, is honoring singer and entrepreneur Usher Raymond IV, known as Usher, with the Family Focus Award. The brunch will be held on June 7, 2009 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
LA’s BEST will also honor Variety with the Community Partner Award. Variety, a key supporter of the Community Jam Against Violence in December 2008, will be honored for their creative support of LA’s BEST. The award will be received by Variety President Neil Stiles. An LA’s BEST Alumnus, Harvard graduate and current Teach for America corps member, Mirla Urzua, is being honored with the Alumnus Award.
Usher is a five time Grammy Award–winning singer and songwriter who has sold more than 38 million albums worldwide. The multitalented performer is also an actor, producer, philanthropist and entrepreneur. Usher is extremely active in the education community; in fact, he has worked alongside LA’s BEST students in the past. Usher’s New Look charity reaches talented youth from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and provides them a chance to learn firsthand about the business side of t he sports and entertainment industries through Camp New Look, a free two-week residential program with some going on to participate in the Mogul VIP program.
The event is expected to raise $800,000 and includes a raffle for an all-new 2010 Lexus Hybrid RX 450h Luxury Utility Vehicle which was generously donated by Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. All funds raised will go to general operating expenses for the organization, which serves more than 28,000 elementary school students in Los Angeles every school day in the hours after the last bell rings. LA’s BEST, a model after school program in the country, is a public-private partnership that relies on the generosity of corporations and individuals to provide these children with the opportunity to be protected, cared for, and engaged in learning and play in the critical hours after school.
