April 16, 2012

LA’s BEST science teams from Anatola, Bassett, Canterbury, Castelar, Euclid and Pacoima elementary schools won the top prize at the 21st Annual LA’s BEST Celebrate Science Fair.  The event, hosted by Aerospace Engineer and Comedian Shayla Rivera hosted with keynote speaker ABC7 Weathercaster Danny Romero took place at California State University, Los Angeles on Sunday, April 15, 2012.  Seventeen science teams from elementary schools around the City of Los Angeles competed to win the four-day trip to the Yosemite Institute, where the winners will experience hands-on science learning while exploring the landscapes of Yosemite National Park.

Runner-up teams from Bright, Cienega, Figueroa, Glen Alta, Harvard, Huerta, Latona, Ramona, Stonehurst, Weigand, and Westminster elementary schools will join the winners for a trip to the Columbia Memorial Space Center in Downey.

More than 70 young scientists demonstrated their knowledge and research skills by presenting projects to a panel of judges made up of researchers from Amgen and the California Institute of Technology, an engineer and scientist from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a high school Principal, a middle school administrator and former district science specialist, and a concept designer from Disney. Family members, friends, and school principals were also in attendance to support their students.

The citywide LA’s BEST Celebrate Science Fair is the annual culmination of the LA’s BEST Celebrate Science Program, in which students across Los Angeles engage in fun-filled, interactive science experiences utilizing the “team inquiry” model developed by LA’s BEST under the guidance of NASA’s JPL.
