LA’s BEST TO HONOR Nickelodeon, Best Buy Geek Squad Summer Academy, and alumnus Miguel Melendez AT 17TH ANNUAL FAMILY BRUNCH

Event to recognize honorees’ and sponsors’ contributions with awards presented by Jennette McCurdy, Rich DeMuro, and Tristan Bowen.

BEVERLY HILLS— LA’s BEST After School Enrichment Program’s 17th Annual Family Brunch will honor Nickelodeon with the Children’s Champion Award, presented to Paula Kaplan by Jennette McCurdy from the hit show, iCarly.  Nickeleodeon will be acknowledged for its contributions as a supporter and for its employees’ volunteer efforts with LA’s BEST, which provides after school education, enrichment and recreation opportunities for 28,000 elementary school children in Los Angeles.  The fundraiser, hosted by KTLA Anchor Michaela Pereira, will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on Sunday, June 3rd.

LA’s BEST will also honor the Best Buy Geek Squad Summer Academy with the Community Partner Award, for its work with hundreds of LA’s BEST students in hands-on technology training. The award will be presented by Rich DeMuro of KTLA and accepted by Moira Hardek, the creator of the Geek Squad Summer Academy. LA’s BEST Alumnus Miguel Melendez, sportswriter at the Pasadena Star-News and contributing writer for Fox Sports Desportes , is being honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award which will be presented to him by Chivas USA forward Tristan Bowen. LA's BEST will also celebrate 21 student winners of the LA's BEST citywide writing and art contest and their families.

There will be live performances by Carly Smithson of American Idol Season 7 and the LA’s BEST Dance Team from Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary. In addition, there will be a presentation of a video directed by LA’s BEST students about bullying.

The LA’s BEST Annual Family Brunch raises funds and awareness to keep elementary school children who live in low-income communities in Los Angeles safe and learning each day after school. These students face numerous challenges, including gang and criminal activity in their communities. It is crucial they have access to the safe, supervised, and enriching environment provided by LA’s BEST until 6:00 p.m. every school day.
