August 21, 2012
LOS ANGELES - In back-to-school spirit, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined Carla Sanger, President and CEO of LA’s BEST, to receive a check for $140,000 from JPMorgan Chase executives Virginia Victorin and Garrett Bland today. LA’s BEST also announced the addition of three new sites during the meeting at Euclid Elementary School.
This is the fourth year Chase has made a donation to LA’s BEST, bringing their total giving since 2009 to over half a million dollars to support English language competency programs.
During the press conference the Mayor also announced the addition of three new LA’s BEST sites - Atwater Elementary, Normont Elementary and Gratts Primary Center - bringing the total number of LA’s BEST sites to 189. Sixty new sites have been opened during Mayor Villaraigosa’s tenure; the most under any mayoral administration since LA’s BEST began in 1988.
“All children deserve to have a safe place to go after school where they can engage in educational activities and connect with the community. LA’s BEST brings that to Los Angeles and I am proud of their continued progress,” Mayor Villaraigosa said.
Guests were greeted by Euclid Elementary School principal Maryhelen Torres, who brought a group of third-graders to the amphitheatre in the Euclid Library for a reading of “Dragons Love Tacos,” emphasizing LA’s BEST’s focus on language competency programs.
LA’s BEST continues to expand each year. Of the nearly 200 program sites, each strives to include up to 30 percent of the school population. The after-school program now serves more than 28,000 children across Los Angeles.
