5th Grade Student Beats Chris Paul in Game of Shoot Out!
Red-hot free-agent and NBA Superstar Chris Paul spends his free time teaching basketball fundamentals to the kids of LA's BEST
June 26, 2013
As speculation swirls about whether Chris Paul will stay with the LA Clippers, a decision he’s forbidden to discuss until Monday, the NBA star chose to use his free time to benefit the children of LA’s BEST.
Paul wrapped up a 5-day basketball clinic today in San Diego with 25 students from LA’s BEST’s Pacoima Charter School attending. CP3’s overnight basketball camp normally costs $650 per child, but his CP3 Foundation covered that cost for the 10 girls and 15 boys from LA’s BEST that attended his basketball camp, and provided $25 in spending money for each of the kids.
At the camp, which took place at UC San Diego, Paul and his staff of instructors taught beginners and college prospects the tips and tricks, and skills and drills that will help them develop as basketball players.
Paul attended all five days of camp and conducted personal lectures, refereed basketball games, signed autographs and even played with some of the kids.
In fact, LA’s BEST student David Hernandez beat Chris Paul at a game of “shoot out” and won a pair of autographed shoes from him! (see photo attached)
Paul left for the basketball camp on Sunday, June 23, the morning after hosting the 25th Anniversary Gala of LA’s BEST on Saturday June 22. At the “LA’s BEST Honors,” Gala, he raised $27,000 during the live auction of a personal Chris Paul basketball clinic for lucky winners and 9 of their friends. The event netted a total of $1.2 million for the organization.
On the court, Paul is a fierce competitor. Off the court, he is a formidable advocate for children and after school programs like LA’s BEST through his own CP3 Foundation.
In New Orleans, Chris created the CP3 Afterschool Zone, an after school program providing children with safe places to enjoy enrichment, sports, and education. When he moved to Los Angeles, Chris joined forces with LA’s BEST, a natural fit with their shared vision of the importance of high-quality after school programs. Over the last year, Chris supported and participated in a 3K walk and health festival with 3,000 LA’s BEST kids and sponsored a holiday surprise for an entire LA’s BEST site, where he and his wife, Jada, personally delivered items from each child’s wish list. He also kicked off the LA’s BEST Summer Reading Program on Friday, June 21st by attending a screening of Monster’s U with LA’s BEST students at Disney’s El Capitan theater.
